WELA Celebrates International Women’s Day 2025 in Grand Style

Women Empowerment and Legal Aid (WELA) marked this year’s International Women’s Day with a vibrant celebration at WELA House, Agege, Lagos, on Friday, 7th March 2025. The event, themed For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment, was a powerful reminder of WELA’s unwavering commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls across Nigeria.

The occasion was graced by distinguished guests, including representatives from fellow NGOs such as Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria, PHWAY Initiative, and CLEEN Foundation. Also in attendance were WELA’s dedicated volunteers, including lawyers from Falana & Falana’s Chambers and instructors from the WELA College of Vocational Training. Members of the community, including representatives from Chessington Montessori School, students from Mount Everest Schools and Sango Senior Secondary School, and a Deputy Director from the Lagos State Agency for Mass Education, also joined in the celebration.

WELA’s Founder and Chairperson, Mrs. Funmi Falana, SAN, delivered a thought-provoking address on the significance of International Women’s Day, emphasizing the importance of standing up for women’s rights and ensuring equal opportunities for all. She also highlighted the case of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, condemning her unconstitutional suspension from the Senate and the blatant disregard for her right to fair hearing. Mrs. Falana reaffirmed WELA’s commitment to seeking justice for women facing discrimination and intimidation in Nigeria.

The highlight of the event was the participation of the 2025 cohort of the WELA College of Vocational Training and the maiden students of WELA’s JAMB and WAEC Tutorial Centre. These talented young women entertained guests with captivating performances, including cultural dances, an impactful drama reflecting the event’s theme, and a powerful poetic recitation celebrating the resilience and strength of women.

The event served as both a celebration and a call to action, reinforcing WELA’s mission to advocate for gender equality, provide legal aid, and empower women and girls with the resources they need to thrive. As always, WELA remains steadfast in its pursuit of justice and empowerment for all women and girls.
