Legal Aid
WELA provides free legal support and guidance to women, children, and the disadvantaged whose rights have been neglected. Our services include free counselling, legal counsel, mediation, court representation, and guidance through Nigeria’s legal system.
Why We Care?
- According to the World Bank, 70% of Nigeria’s poor are women.
This high percentage of poverty among women is due to a number of factors including unequal access to education and employment opportunities.
- Women and children are often most vulnerable to exploitation, abuse, domestic violence, and rape.
- Widows and orphans, especially, are often subjected to discriminatory practices including denial of property rights, exclusion from inheritance and lack of access to basic services.
In many Nigeria cultures and rural communities, widows and orphans are considered to be at the bottom of the social ladder and treated as second-class citizens.
- The legal system can play a big role in helping rehabilitate victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse and other forms of exploitation.
Legal aid is an important step towards a more just and equitable society, where everyone has access to justice regardless of their social status or financial situation.
How You Can Help
- Report any cases of abuse or domestic, especially against women or children, to the relevant authorities
You can contact the Police, or WELA, or the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency.
- Always ensure the fair, equal and equitable treatment of your family members, relatives, friends and employees, regardless of gender.
You can provide financial support to legal aid organizations and ensure they the have the resources they need to provide effective services.
- Support all initiatives that encourage the provision and delivery of quality education and other services to less privileged.
This includes volunteering to support community initiatives
- Invest towards ensuring that legal aid is accessible to all – especially women and children
