The vision of the scholarship board is borne out of the numerous and genuine agitations by recognized international and local institutions like UN, UNESCO, UNICEF, ECOWAS, UBE etc. ‘The scholarship initiative is one the activities of Women empowerment and legal aid [WELA], a nongovernmental organisation that defends and protects the rights of women and children . It is a vision of Mrs Funmi Falana, a human right activist and the director of WELA.  Education has been recognized as a veritable tool to liberate human race from poverty, ignorance and other social vices. United Nations, Education, Scientific and Cultural organization (UNESCO) believes that education is a human right for all throughout life and that access must be matched by quality.
On 25th September 2015, 193 world leaders during the UN general assembly adopted 17 new Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’S) to replace the Millennium Development Goals MDG’s. Goal 4 of the SDG laid emphasis on “Quality Education”. The education statistics around the world is appalling! As of 2012, 31 million primary- school pupils worldwide dropped out of school, while girls are less likely to begin school, boys are more likely to repeat grades or drop-out altogether. Also, 53% of the worlds out-of- school children are girls and 2/3 of the illiterate people in the world are women (UNICEF report).
The Nigeria situation does not seem better off, according to the UNESCO report of 2015 based on people aged 15 or over who can read and write, Nigeria literacy rate average 59.5% with the male having 69.2% and female 49.7%. Funding of education in Nigeria has been dwindling continuously over the years. UNESCO recommends 26% of budgetary allocations of any country to education. However, in the 2017 budget for Nigeria #455.41billion was set aside for education representing about 7% of the total budget. Hence, the need arises to augment the government fund allocated to the educational sectorthroughothermeans.
Tertiary education is the worst hit of the menace of under- funding. With the recent proliferation of private universities across all states in Nigeria coupled with the astronomical increase in school fee across board, the cost of accessing “Quality Education” in our tertiary institution has been on the increase. As a result of the above children of the less privileged are been denied the right to education.
Hence, the scholarship board an initiative of WELA has deemed it fit to support well deserving undergraduate of federal tertiary institutions, who has a proven record of academic excellence financially. This scholarship fund is a way of paying back to the society. The board here-by implore qualified candidates to comply with the application rules and requirements and at the end make judicious use of the money given to them. Wishing qualified applicant the best of luck and success in their academic pursuit.

Mrs.FunmiFalana
Chairperson Scholarship Board
